Discussing the evidence supporting MPAs as Nature-based solutions for biodiversity loss and climate change at IMPAC5

In February 2023, the International Partnership on MPAs, Biodiversity and Climate Change led a knowledge sharing session at the Fifth International MPA Congress (IMPAC5). The session “Global Exchange For Global Action: Marine Protected Areas As Key Tools In Stemming Biodiversity Loss And Tackling Climate Change” looked to discuss the role of MPAs as key tools in tackling biodiversity loss and climate change: identifying where the evidence gaps and opportunities are, and how we can work together for the global ocean.

The event showcased work by partners and launched a new case study in the Blue Carbon in MPAs series to support the role of MPAs as Nature-based solutions. Current views on evidence gaps and needs were presented, followed by an open discussion with session participants. More on the session can be read here.

The congress took place in Vancouver, Canada, from 3-9 February 2023 and was jointly hosted by the Host First Nations — Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh — together with the Government of Canada, Province of British Columbia, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
